Natural Treatments for Inflammation
November 29th, 2017
Inflammation is at the heart of all disease. Inflammation is a biological and necessary response for our body’s healing process in the presence of dying cells, pathogens, and other irritants. However, the presence of chronic inflammation can be devastating to our health.
What is the difference between Acute and Chronic Inflammation?
Acute inflammation is the temporary response to undesirable bacteria and/or tissue injury. The onset of this level of inflammation is rapid and tends to only last a few days, sometimes a few weeks. At this point whatever caused this onset either improves, turns into an abscess, or becomes a chronic condition. Acute inflammation usually involves pain, swelling, redness, heat, and loss of mobility. Examples of acute inflammation include sore throats, bronchitis, appendicitis, physical trauma, cuts/scratches, etc.
Chronic Inflammation results from
the body’s inability to breakdown or eliminate pathogens that caused the acute inflammation such as viruses, foreign matter, and/or overactive immune system responses. The onset of this condition is slower and can last months to years. As a result the body continues to break down as this constant “flame” causes our connective tissue to become thickened, scarred, and even die off completely. Examples would include Periodontitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Asthma, Hepatitis, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Asthma, Gout, etc.
In the presence of chronic inflammation the major systems of the body can no longer communicate properly. The very organs that inflammatory response was set to protect become plagued by the exact opposite effect and the result is extremely dangerous. Chronic inflammation is at the root of debilitating and deadly diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Gout, Arthritis, Stroke, Asthma, Heart Disease, Kidney Disease, Cancer, and more.
How can you protect yourself from Chronic Inflammation?
- Drink water, water, and more water. Be sure your water source is pure and non-chlorinated.
- Spice up your life. Spices are full of antioxidants and contain anti-inflammatory properties.
- Heat and castor oil can bring a great deal of pain relief when inflamed.
- Address your diet. 70% of the immune system resided in the digestive tract. Good bacteria and acidic/alkaline balance is crucial to this piece of the puzzle.
- De-stress! Wait….can stress help lead to a gout attack? You bet! Stress is acidic, strips the body of vital nutrients, and weakens its ability to fight infections.
- Cannabis. Research suggests that this herbal plant can naturally relieve inflammation and reduce symptoms of pain. Of course, before using cannabis, you will need to check the legality of it in your area and look into the different ways to use it such as the use of extracts for example. - Exercise. There are a number of low-impact exercise types you can do to avoid strain on the joints. Exercise releases endorphins, lowers stress, addresses any lingering weight issues, and more.
- Keep a healthy mouth. Brush and floss regularly.
- SLEEP!
- Several classes of nutritional supplements are all geared towards fighting acute and chronic inflammation. These include enzymes, anti-oxidants, essential fatty acids, fiber, vitamins, minerals, herbs and probiotics.
